Tech in Asia is hiring a Tech Reporter to chronicle China’s massive technology industry for an international audience. You will profile movers and shakers, write trend pieces showing how the industry is changing itself and the world, and analyze the most significant developments in China’s tech scene. This position is based in Beijing, Shanghai, or Shenzhen. The ideal applicant has experience in writing feature stories and is proficient in Mandarin and English. Apply for the 2016 International China Journalists Association awards

The 2016 International China Journalists Association awards contest is now accepting submissions.

ICJA promotes excellence in China-related reporting through an annual awards contest. This year, ICJA will recognize one winner in each of three categories: General Excellence, Investigative, and Commentary/Opinion. Articles published between April 1, 2015, and April 1, 2016 are eligible. The deadline for submissions is May 18.

Work space available at shared journalist office on Julu Lu

Hello,

we are a multilingual office community of seven journalists working for European media such as Stern/Le Figaro/Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung/Swiss TV & radio plus five Chinese news assistants. Some of us are staff correspondents, others freelancers. We share a nicely located work space in an apartment compound on Julu Lu cross Xiangyang Lu. One of our writers is leaving in January therefore we are welcoming a new colleague to take over her space. It’s a desk in a big open room available to rent for 900 Kuai a month plus utilities (electricity, water, coffee, wifi, printer ayi etc.) Ideally you are also looking for a news assistant to support you part-time.

Studio 5 is located in an old Shanghai villa near Jiashan Market, and currently houses 12 entrepreneurial businesses, including Elke Martini, LuRu Home, NOO Originals, FINCH, Mr. Waffle, The British Kitchen, and ARTSpring.  We also are home to several talented writers and artists.

We have space available and are currently looking for new members.  Here’s what is available:

Available immediately:  One private office 4.1m x 3.6m (15sqm).  You  may configure it as a private room, or put in 2-3 desks if you’d prefer to share.   Desks and chairs included, or furnish as you like. 4500 RMB/month, two month minimum commitment.

Available May 1st: One private office 4.1m x 5m (20sqm).  You  may configure it as a private room, or put in 2-3 desks if you’d prefer to share. Desks and chairs included, or furnish as you like. 5000 RMB/month, two month minimum commitment.

Palgrave Macmillan is looking for two motivated editors to manage the growing Social Sciences and Finance, Business and Management lists. The editor will be responsible for acquiring and publishing a program of research monographs, professional texts and handbooks for the scholarly and professional markets.

 

Major Responsibilities:

 

  • Seek out new authors and book ideas: actively research ideas, topics, and people for potential books and book series.
  • Evaluate manuscripts to determine publishability, audience, and market; offer editorial feedback.
  • Negotiate the acquisition/contract process with author.
  • Serve as a project manager for each book project, coordinating delivery date, manuscript formatting, production workflows, and author management.
  • Attend academic conferences and conduct campus visits to meet new authors and promote Palgrave’s brand.
  • Liaise with sales, marketing, and publicity.
  • Oversee an editorial assistant to ensure high-quality list management.

 

 

Required Skills / Knowledge:

 

  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal) in both English and Mandarin
  • In-depth knowledge/experience of the academic / educational market and publishing
  • Keen proofreading skills
  • Familiarity with basic Microsoft Office applications
  • Experience in an editorial acquisition capacity and/or in an academic publishing environment
  • Ability to prioritize, meet deadlines and work independently
  • Significant experience in an editorial, sales or marketing role in a books or journals publisher
  • Educated to BA or equivalent
