“What the hell has happened in America?”
Speaker: James Fallows, correspondent for The Atlantic and prolific author
Since leaving China in 2011, Shanghai’s own James Fallows has spent a lot of time reporting on this question for The Atlantic. He’ll discuss the political and international ramifications of the Trump era, and also the surprising developments in “the real America” that he and his wife Deborah (author of Dreaming in Chinese) have found in their recent four-year journey, by single-engine airplane, through small towns in “Red State” America. This will be a world-premiere peek at their upcoming book Our Towns: A 100,000 Mile Journey Into the Heart of America, which will be published next May.
About the speaker: Fallows grew up in rural California, studied American history and literature at Harvard and then economics at Oxford, and worked in the White House as President Carter’s chief speechwriter before joining the Atlantic in 1979. From 2006 through 2011, he and Deborah spent most of their time in China, starting with two years in Shanghai. His 11 books include two about China: Postcards from Tomorrow Square and China Airborne.
