“Sweep away all monsters and demons’’ was on June 1, 1966, this
summer 50 years ago, the openingshot of the Cultural Revolution by
People’s Daily. This editorial was the start of a 10-year period of chaos,
purges, fighting and economic disasters in all of China, but especially in
big cities like Shanghai. Following ten books about the modern history
of China, the British/Dutch historian professor Frank Dikötter published
this year his extensively documented and widely applauded The Cultural
Revolution, A People’s History 1962-1976. Dikötter is chair-professor of
humanities at the University of Hong Kong and before that Professor of
the modern history of China at the University of Londen. Oscar
Garschagen, China-correspondent of the Dutch newspaper NRC
Handelsblad will introduce him.
