Author and folk rock singer-songwriter Liu Jian will perform songs from his soon to be released CD and explain how independent creatives navigate the maze of business, legal, and political issues that dominate China’s publishing and music industries. He’ll play a few songs and speak for 20 minutes on the topic. An interpreter will be on hand for translation.

About the speaker:
Liu Jian is a former soldier who left the Chinese army to pursue writing and music. He is the author of three novels, which were published for the China market and have together sold around 50,000 copies. His latest book, “Memories of a Wandering Singer,” was published in September by Hongqi Publishing, and is made up of the fictional backstories of eight of his songs. The accompanying CD will be released later this month. In 2010 Liu Jian founded Shanghai Folk Rock United, a showcase for Chinese and foreign singer-songwriters to perform together. Liu Jian is also the founder of Sparrow Creative, a cultural company. His website can be found at www.liu-jian.com.
