Join the FCC for an evening with Joy Chen (陈愉), a Chinese-American former Deputy Mayor of Los Angeles. Her book Do Not Marry Before Age 30 became a bestseller across mainland China, and the title of the work has become an internet meme and rallying cry among independent-minded young Chinese women. Joy has engaged with millions of young Chinese women through Weibo, speeches and online events, and recently completed a multi-city book tour in China. Joy will hold an interactive discussion with the FCC regarding the hopes and aspirations of China’s 90-hou, the ways in which media both reflects and shapes Chinese society. She’ll also talk about her own journey as child of an immigrant Chinese family to America, to becoming a deputy mayor of L.A., to returning to her Chinese roots as a best-selling author, fashion icon and pop-culture media creator in China.
About the speaker: Joy Chen is a Chinese-American former Deputy Mayor of Los Angeles and author of the China bestseller Do Not Marry Before Age 30. Movie rights to the book were sold to Wanda Media, and Joy also has a movie in development with Alibaba Pictures about a female CEO-recruiter hunting for Mr. Right. Joy is described by ABC News as “a superstar in China,” and “the champion of young women known as ‘leftovers,’” and has been profiled as a modern female role model across Chinese women’s media including Vogue, ELLE, Marie Claire, Esquire, Good Housekeeping, Cosmopolitan, Harper’s Bazaar, and others. She has a unique perspective on China’s young people, as she is the only foreigner to have written a best-selling book expressly for China.
